Book Review: The Intuitive Eating Workbook

Evelyn Tribole, MS RDN and Elyse Resch, MS, RDN the authors of the Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works, also created a workbook to accompany the text. The Intuitive Eating Workbook is a 250 page workbook which goes through each of the 10 Principles of Intuitive Eating.

The Intuitive Eating Workbook provides additional information as well as writing prompts to help the reader go further into understanding themselves and their relationship with food and their body.

Who is this workbook for?

This workbook is for you if you have read the Intuitive Eating book and want to get further into the work of applying it in your own life.

What is in the workbook?

The writing prompts are both questions which request a short answer form of response and others are simple check boxes style exercises. These exercises bring the Intuitive Eating principles from just a concept on a page and brings the concepts into your own life experiences and struggles.

This is an example of the short answer form of questions within Chapter 5: Principle Five Feel Your Fullness.

If you are someone who writes longer responses it would be helpful to have another blank journal to continue your responses past the two lines provided in the workbook.

How to get the most out of this workbook

If you purchase this workbook with the intention of "finishing it" from start to finish, I would challenge you to use it in a different way.

The workbook is packed with a lot of information and exercises and if you tackle it and expect to "finish the work" in a short period of time you may feel exhausted and overwhelmed.

Here are my 5 tips on how to get the most out of this workbook:

  • Take a review of the book by flipping through it and then decide which area is a top priority for you to tackle right now.

  • Start in the section of the book that feels the most useful for you

  • Do some of the journal prompts written and do some of them verbally or just in your mind.

  • You can read one or two journal prompts and to for walk or bike ride or just lay on the floor on your yoga mat and ponder them. You do not have to write your responses.

  • Take your time. Go slow with the workbook. This workbook took me over a year to fully complete in my own life. You don't need to rush it.

This workbook could now use an update

The workbook is based on the information and research presented in the 3rd edition of the Intuitive Eating book. Since the workbook was created the authors Evelyn Tribole and Eylse Resch have updated the Intuitive Eating book with their 4th edition release.

The update on the book has reduced stigmatizing language around weight and revised Principle 7: Cope with Your Feelings Without Using Food. The new chapter "Cope with Your Emotions with Kindness" in the new revised Intuitive Eating book, removes stigma with using food to cope with your emotions (which is normal). I would recommend skipping this section in the workbook until it has been revised.

Where can you buy the workbook?

You can order the workbook online from Indigo books or most anywhere books are sold.
